Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the blow of this epic fail.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so awful that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer level of destruction and just resigns itself to fate, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You question about the nature of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
Catastrophe of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck without warning, destroying read more entire towns in its path. Buildings shattered like sandcastles, and the screams that ensued was deafening. Worst Day Ever
It all started with a case of terrible hair. I couldn't do it to look presentable. As I was scrambling out the door, I trippedon and gracefully all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was extremely late for a very important appointment.
I arrived. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was a hopeless situation.
The rest of the day was an absolute nightmare. Everything. I couldn'tfocus.
By the time I reached my destination, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as a day to forget.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
